Hair Colour

Hair colour was very important to Elizabethan women as it was the 'beauty ideal' of it's time. It was popular to have light hair and a light complexion. Most women dyed their hair yellow to achieve this, a mixture of cumin and saffron was used as a hair dye to make their hair go that colour. Sometimes if you could not afford those ingredients to make the dye then people would use urine to dye their hair. Elizabeth I was iconic because she naturally had red hair which became an influence to Elizabethan women at the time.

Hair Styles

Hair styles were extremely important for Elizabethan women as it was a way of showing off their features and status. The most common hairstyles that were worn included plaits and curled hair. On occasion they may include buns, however most of it was in the style of an up do and frizzy.

The women wore a lot of dresses that would shape their face therefore they would have up do's that got the hair away from their face and neck to show off these features.

Adornments were added depending on your status and wealth at the time. This was a way of showing off what you owned weather it be pearls, jewels etc. All of this would be placed in the hair for people to see.

The more prestigious Elizabethan women would shave their own hair and just rely on wearing wigs everyday, this way it was easier to put on a wig that waste time styling it, when someone could do that for you the night before. Fringes were not popular in those times as the women all tried to accentuate their foreheads as much as they could. They shaved their eyebrows and the top of their hairline in order to make their forehead appear larger.
