Hairstyles were extremely important to women during this time, it allowed them to present themselves to people, showing their wealth, age etc. The elizabethan hairstyles and fashion of the time were very dependent upon symbols and how women want to be portrayed. Adornments of the hair, colour of the hair, skin etc, clothing, all symbolised different things.

The hairstyles were focused on covering the hair and not showing it off whether that was with pearls, beads etc or full head pieces.

Older women did not show their hair from fear of being labelled 'a witch'.
Young women wore their hair loose and visible most of the time.

Gabble hood: These were common in english women.

French hood: This was most popular in France. Round in shape and worn over a veil at the back of the head.

Caul: This was essentially a hair net embellished with pearls and gems. Upper class women wore these embellished nets as it showed their wealth and power.

Coif: This was a close fitting cap usually made from linen (white) that was designed to keep the hair off the face. These were most common in the lower class working women as they could keep their hair of their face whilst working and it wasn't expensive to make.
