Today instead of using my kate head to practice on we were able to use each other to practice different techniques that we have learnt over the past few weeks. It was very different working on someone else there was a lot of different things you had to take into account. For example:

Hair length.
Thickness of the hair.
Putting heat on the hair and not getting too close to the scalp that it will burn their head.
The hair is not an even thickness all the way around, so i had to consider how i was going to create the same look all the way round even though some part of the hair were a lot thinner than others.
Being over all a lot more gentle with the hair.

For this look i did on liv, i wanted to incorporate the fact she has long hair, i didn’t want to put it all up.

I sectioned off at the ear to create the front section and crimped and backcombed so i was able to create the volume to do the roll at the front of the head. This was difficult to get even as the front of liv’s hair was very thin compared to the rest of her hair.

I then created a middle parting and made a horizontal section just below the ear so that i could leave some hair down at the back. I created 2 french plaits on the left and right side and then twisted the ends of the plaits into a pair bun where the french plaits ended.

The rest of the hair i curled using a clamp curler. I held the clamp vertically to the head to create loose waves. I split the back section into 2 and then made sure the clamp was on the outside of the different sections so that the hair was curled away from the face.

I think this look went well seen as it was my first time on another student and not using the dolls head. My timing was good and i never felt rushed to finish. I got a bit scared that the crimpers were too hot and were uncomfortable for Liv, as i didn’t want to burn her. I think with more practice i will get used to using heat on the hair. Once i got into it i was less anxious about doing it.

In our practical session we practiced 2 different types of curl and 2 different techniques.

On the left is a Spiral curl, this is curled and pinned vertically to cool.
In the middle is the Roller curl, this is curled and pinned horizontally to cool.

Spiral Curl:

Hold the barrel of the curler vertically and depending on what way you want the curl to face you either point the clamp away or towards you.
Loosen the clamp and gently pull out of the hair, take the hair and keep it in a curl and pin it into place (vertically). Work from the bottom moving up.
I need to practice pinning my spirals curls as i found they dropped when i pinned them, which will affect the end result.

Roller Curl:

Hold the barrel of the curler horizontally and clamp the hair at the end and roll the hair to the base of the hair, when doing this lift the hair so that the curl doesn't droop down when you pin it.
Pin the curl horizontally and work upwards toward the parting of the hair, work in sections.
Where i sectioned the curls there are some gaps, this can affect the way the hair falls when i have taken them out. Next time i do this i will use the 'brick effect' technique that is mentioned below so that i will not get the gaps in the hair.

After we pulled our fingers through the curls and placed them where we wanted to, you can see there is a difference in styles. The roller curl side has a lot more lift and volume to it whereas the spiral curls lay more flat to the head.

As you can see this new technique that i learnt helps with the gaps that i create from just doing basic sectioning and working from bottom up.

The idea is that you use a brick, layering effect. You stack the hair in a particular patter so that there is no gaps when you take out the pins.

This was definitely a better technique for me and worked to help me reduce the amount of gaps within the hair and sectioning. Whenever i am curling a section again i would definitely consider using a brick effect sectioning pattern to create a fuller look.

I need to work on creating clean sections and practice sitting my layers perfectly inline with one another. I found the sectioning quite difficult but the more i practice the more it seemed to get easier and look neater.
